Where to stay in Bali for a honeymoon (2026)

24 August 2026 · 6 min read

Bali is one of the world's great honeymoon destinations and also one of the easiest to get wrong, because the areas that photograph best for a holiday are not the ones that feel romantic at 9pm. Here is how to structure it.

The classic two-base split

Jungle then ocean, in that order, is the formula almost everyone lands on and it works.

  • Four or five nights in Ubud: river valleys, rice terraces, temples, spas and a villa with a pool overlooking green. Cooler nights, early mornings, no crowds after dark. The rice terraces and waterfalls are on your doorstep.
  • Four or five nights on the coast: Uluwatu or Ungasan for cliffs and dramatic sunsets, Nusa Dua for swimmable white sand, Jimbaran for a calm bay and seafood on the beach, Seminyak if you want restaurants within walking distance.

Where not to book a honeymoon

Kuta and Legian, which are loud and budget-focused, and central Canggu, which is wonderful for a month of surfing and quite hard work for romance: traffic, scooters and a social scene rather than a private one. If you want Canggu's food with less noise, stay in Pererenan instead.

What to look for in the villa

  • A genuinely private pool, not a shared complex pool. This is the whole point.
  • A view or a walled garden, so that privacy survives the daytime.
  • One bedroom. Two-bedroom villas are often cheaper per room and never feel like a honeymoon.
  • Air conditioning in the bedroom and insect screens, because romance and mosquitoes do not mix.
  • Somewhere to eat on site, since a private dinner on your own terrace beats a 40-minute drive.
  • Ask about construction next door. This is the single most common way a honeymoon villa disappoints, and it is checkable: see how to rent somewhere quiet.

Things worth building the trip around

  • Sunset and the kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple, which is genuinely moving rather than touristy.
  • Seafood tables on the sand at Jimbaran as the sun goes down, covered in eating in Jimbaran.
  • A spa day. Bali does this better and cheaper than almost anywhere.
  • A day on Nusa Penida or a few nights on quiet Gili Meno if you want an island interlude.
  • One completely empty day per base. The best honeymoon memories are not scheduled.

When to go

The dry season, April to October, gives you the most reliable weather, and May and September combine that with lower prices and fewer people. July and August are beautiful and busy, with 20 to 40 percent higher rates. The wet months are cheaper and greener, with afternoon downpours that a covered terrace turns into an asset: see the best time to visit.

What it costs

A private-pool one-bedroom villa booked direct typically runs from around 70 to 150 dollars a night, with cliff and beachfront properties well above that. Add a car with a driver for transfer days, a couple of spa visits and dinners, and a ten-day honeymoon for two sits comfortably in the range set out in what two weeks costs.

Getting married here too?

Many couples combine the two. The paperwork is more involved than the brochures suggest: see getting married in Bali before you commit to dates.

Book the villa direct

Honeymoons are where platform commission of 15 to 25 percent hurts most, because it is charged on the most expensive accommodation of your life so far. Renting direct from the owner means the owner's rate, a written agreement, and a manager you can ask for an early check-in, a quiet corner or flowers on the bed. Browse private-pool villas in the rentals catalogue, or ask in the FAQ.
