Getting married in Bali: what a wedding actually involves (2026)
31 August 2026 · 6 min read
Bali hosts thousands of foreign weddings a year, and the photographs make it look simple. The ceremony usually is. The legal side is where couples get surprised, so start there.
Legal versus symbolic: the key decision
Indonesia does not have a civil marriage in the European sense. A legally registered marriage must be solemnised according to one of the officially recognised religions, and in practice both parties are expected to share that religion, with the marriage then registered with the civil registry office. That is entirely achievable for many couples, with the right paperwork and a planner who does it regularly.
Many couples take the other route: marry legally at home, in a registry office appointment that takes twenty minutes, then hold a symbolic ceremony in Bali with no legal effect and complete freedom over how it looks. There is no paperwork, no religious requirement and no risk of a document problem derailing the day.
If you want it legally registered in Indonesia
Expect to provide, in broad terms:
- Passports and birth certificates.
- A certificate of no impediment to marriage, obtained from your embassy or consulate in Indonesia.
- Proof of the end of any previous marriage, such as a divorce decree or a death certificate.
- Documents relating to religion, depending on the ceremony.
- Translations and legalisations, and registration with the civil registry within the required period after the ceremony.
- Witnesses.
Requirements, fees and processing times vary by nationality and change over time, so verify everything with your own embassy and a licensed local planner well before you book. Note also that the marriage will need to be recognised in your home country, which usually means an apostille or legalisation step afterwards. This is the one part of a Bali wedding worth paying a professional for.
Venue types
- Cliff chapels and clifftop lawns on the Bukit around Uluwatu and Ungasan: the classic ocean-backdrop wedding.
- Beach ceremonies, which usually require permission and a venue partner; a public beach is not simply bookable.
- Jungle and rice-terrace settings around Ubud: green, cooler, more intimate.
- Private villa weddings, where you rent a large villa for the party and host the ceremony and dinner on site. Usually the best value for 20 to 60 guests, and the easiest to control.
- Resort packages in Nusa Dua and Seminyak, which handle everything and price accordingly.
Timing
Book in the dry season, April to October, and avoid the July and August price peak if you can. May, June and September are the sweet spot: reliable weather, manageable crowds, better availability. If you must marry in the wet season, build a covered plan B into the contract, because an afternoon downpour is likely rather than possible. Also check the Balinese calendar: Nyepi closes the island entirely in March, see the Nyepi guide, and major ceremony periods affect staffing and venues.
Realistic costs
An intimate symbolic ceremony with a celebrant, a photographer, flowers and dinner for a handful of people can be done from a few thousand dollars. A full wedding for 50 guests at a cliff venue with catering, drinks, decor, planner, hair and makeup, music and photography runs into tens of thousands, much like anywhere else. The variables are guest count, venue prestige and drinks.
Where to put your guests
This is the practical problem most couples underestimate. A group of 20 to 60 people needs housing within a short drive of the venue, at a range of budgets, without everyone paying resort rates. Large villas with multiple bedrooms work well for the wedding party, with apartments and smaller villas nearby for everyone else. Keep travel times in mind, because the south of Bali moves slowly, as the travel times guide explains, and brief guests on local etiquette and getting around before they arrive.
Honeymoon afterwards
Do not fly home from your own wedding. Move to a second base for a few quiet days: where to stay for a honeymoon covers the options.
Block-booking direct is where you save
On a wedding, accommodation is usually the largest line after catering, and platform commission of 15 to 25 percent applies to every room your guests book. Renting direct from owners means real prices, written agreements, and a manager who can coordinate several properties and arrival times for you. Start with the rentals catalogue or ask in the FAQ.
