When is the best time to visit Bali? (2026)

18 May 2026 · 6 min read

Bali has no bad months, only mismatched expectations. Temperatures sit between 26 and 32C all year, so the real variables are rain, wind, swell and crowds. Here is how to pick your window.

The two seasons

  • Dry season, roughly April to October. Less humidity, long sunny days, southeast winds that blow offshore on the west coast. The best weather and the best west-coast surf.
  • Wet season, roughly November to March. Sunny mornings, heavy afternoon downpours of one to two hours, the warmest sea of the year, the greenest landscape and the lowest prices.

The crowd peaks

July and August bring European summer and Australian school holidays together: the best weather of the year, 20 to 40 percent higher accommodation rates and heavy traffic in the south. The period from around 20 December to 10 January is the sharpest peak of all, with 30 to 50 percent premiums. Everything else is manageable.

The best overall months

  • May: dry, uncrowded, fairly priced. The most frequently recommended month by people who live here.
  • September: dry-season sunshine after the summer crowds leave, calm seas for island crossings, excellent underwater visibility.
  • April: the rains stop while the island is still green from them, waterfalls full, shoulder prices.
  • First half of June: peak weather at pre-peak prices.

Best time for specific plans

  • West-coast surf at Padang Padang, Bingin and Batu Bolong: May to September. Details in surf seasons month by month.
  • Learning to surf: any month, because beginner beaches like Kuta work year-round. See the beginner guide.
  • Diving and snorkelling around Amed: best visibility roughly April to November.
  • Nusa Penida and the Gilis: calmest crossings in the dry season. The boats run year-round but wet-season swell makes for an unpleasant ride. See Nusa Penida.
  • Family beach time at Geger or Sanur: these reef-protected coasts work all year, and the east coast is actually better in the wet months.
  • Mount Batur sunrise: dry season for clear views, see the trek.
  • Rice terraces at their greenest: the wet months, especially February.

Dates to check before booking

  • Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls in March and closes the airport for 24 hours. The date moves each year with the Saka calendar, so verify it: the Nyepi guide.
  • Galungan and Kuningan, the most important Balinese festival cycle, moves through the calendar and fills the island with ceremonies, decorated bamboo poles and closed businesses in the best possible way.
  • 17 August, Indonesian Independence Day, brings parades and street games.
  • Ramadan and Idul Fitri affect domestic travel across Indonesia and fill Bali with visitors from other islands.

How long to come for

Ten days is the minimum for a trip that does not feel rushed; two weeks is comfortable; a month changes the economics entirely. See how many days you need and the week-long itinerary.
