Uluwatu Temple & Kecak Dance

A temple on the edge of a 70-metre cliff and the fire kecak dance at sunset — Bali's signature evening.

Entry about Rp 50,000, kecak about Rp 150,0002–3 hours (with the dance)

Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six key temples, perched on the very edge of a cliff at the south-west tip of the Bukit peninsula. The inner courtyards are closed to tourists, but that's not why people come: a clifftop path runs along the drop with ocean views from 70 metres up, and every evening an amphitheatre above the cliff hosts the kecak — a ritual dance where a chanting choir of dozens of men replaces the orchestra, ending with fire against the sunset sky.

It's 15–25 minutes by scooter from Uluwatu and Bingin, about 40 from Jimbaran and well over an hour from Canggu or Ubud. Cover shoulders and knees — sarongs are provided at the entrance. Kecak tickets sell out in high season: arrive by 5 p.m. or book online. And mind the macaques — they expertly snatch glasses, hats and phones, so pack valuables away before entering.

Tips

  • •Sit on the ocean side of the amphitheatre — the dance plays out against the sunset
  • •Take off glasses and earrings beforehand: Uluwatu's monkeys are the boldest on the island
  • •Arrange your ride home in advance — taxis are scarce after the show
