Bali's rental market attracts scammers for a simple reason: high demand and guests who book from thousands of kilometres away. Know the six classic schemes and you're effectively immune.

1. The fake listing

A beautiful villa 30–40% below market, photos stolen from a real listing elsewhere. After the deposit, the "owner" vanishes. Defence: a video call from inside the villa, and a reverse image search of the photos.

2. The double booking

One villa rented to several guests for the same dates. You arrive; someone already lives there. Defence: a contract with exact dates and a company with a reputation to lose.

3. The unit switch
