Batur is an active 1,717-metre volcano in the island's north, standing in a giant caldera with a lake. The classic is the sunrise trek: start from the base around 4 a.m., climb 1.5–2 hours by torchlight, and watch dawn from the crater rim with views over Lake Batur, Mount Abang and Agung — on clear days all the way to Rinjani on Lombok. On top, guides cook eggs on volcanic steam for breakfast.
Ubud is the most convenient base — an hour to the trailhead, so pickup is around 2:00–2:30 a.m.; from the coast it's 2–2.5 hours. Tours include transfer, guide, torch and breakfast. The climb is technically easy but relentless — volcanic gravel uphill all the way. It's about +10 °C and windy before dawn: bring a jumper and windbreaker, and wear trainers, not flip-flops. Local guide association rules mean you climb with a guide — going solo invites conflict.
Tips
- •Be asleep by 8 p.m. — the 2 a.m. alarm otherwise ruins the whole day
- •Bring cash: coffee and water are sold on the summit at summit prices
- •Finish with the hot springs by Lake Batur on the way down
