Bali with kids: a 5–7 day itinerary

Family Bali means the calm lagoons of the south-east, turtles, monkeys and a water park. The golden rule: one activity a day, the rest is the sea.

Best for: For families with kids of any age: short transfers, safe beaches and a programme that ends with children asleep and happy.

  1. Days 1–2

    Base camp and calm water

Stay in the south-east — Nusa Dua, Benoa or Sanur: wave-free lagoons, gentle entry, shade. The first two days are beach and pool only — acclimatising with kids beats any sightseeing. Evenings: Sanur's beachfront path or dinner at a family cafe.

  2. Day 3

    Water sports and turtles

A morning at Tanjung Benoa: banana boat, parasailing for the older kids and a boat trip to Turtle Island, where children get to hold baby turtles. After lunch — nap and pool: the heat peaks by then.

  3. Day 4

    Ubud for kids

A jungle day: the Monkey Forest (kids love it — hold on to your belongings), lunch overlooking rice fields, then the Tegallalang terraces or an easy waterfall. It's about an hour from Sanur: leave by 8 a.m., be back for dinner.

  4. Day 5

    Water park or beach day

The big water park in Kuta is the thing kids remember longer than any temple: slides for every age, a lazy river, toddler zones. Buy tickets online in advance. For a quieter day — white-sand Melasti beach or your own lagoon.

  5. Days 6–7

Sunsets and goodbye to the sea

No heroics at the end: sea, ice cream, and one family sunset outing — Uluwatu Temple with the kecak fire dance (it mesmerises kids too) or a seafood dinner on the sand at Jimbaran, where children can run between the tables. Keep the last day free: packing with kids is an activity of its own.

FAQ

Which Bali area is best with kids?

Nusa Dua and Benoa for wave-free lagoons and the best swimming beaches; Sanur for the beachfront path and calm vibe. The west coast (Kuta, Canggu) is trickier with small children — waves and currents.

What should I pack for a child?

SPF 50+, hats and rash vests — the equatorial sun is harsh even when cloudy. Bring your usual medicine kit; everything else is easy to buy locally.

Is the food safe for kids?

Yes: tourist cafes have familiar kids' menus, fruit and smoothies. Simple rules — bottled water, washed fruit, busy places. 'No spicy' is understood everywhere.
