East Bali: a 3–4 day itinerary

The east is Bali as it was twenty years ago: rice valleys under Mount Agung, temples without crowds, black sand and the island's best snorkelling.

Best for: For those who've seen the south or want to escape it: a slow, green, authentic Bali with overnights along the way.

  1. Day 1

    The Sidemen valley

Leave the south after breakfast and two hours later you're in another world: the Sidemen valley, rice terraces under Agung's slopes, weaving villages and roads without tourists. Check into a guesthouse with a volcano view, walk the fields, eat at a warung. This is the place where there's nothing to tick off — that's the point.

  2. Day 2

Gates of Heaven and water palaces

At dawn, Lempuyang temple: the famous Gates of Heaven framing Mount Agung (the photo queue is real — arrive by 7 a.m.). Then the Tirta Gangga water palace with its pools and koi, and optionally the seaside Ujung palace. By evening, roll into Amed: fishing villages, black sand, jukung boats on the shore.

  3. Day 3

    Amed: snorkelling and the shipwreck

The east's real treasure is underwater: the Liberty shipwreck lies off Tulamben with reef starting right from the beach, shallow enough for snorkellers. Amed itself has a smaller Japanese wreck and coral gardens in every bay. Between swims, grilled fish at a beach warung; at dusk, sunset with Agung on the horizon.

  4. Day 4

The Gilis or the road back

A fast boat runs from Amed to the Gili Islands in about an hour — with a couple of spare days, extend the trip with turtles and bicycles. If it's time to head back, take the southern road via Padang Bai and the Goa Lawah bat-cave temple, with a stop at Pandawa beach or in Sanur.

FAQ

How many days does the east need?

Two overnights minimum (Sidemen + Amed), ideally three or four. A day trip from the south makes no sense — the driving alone is 4–5 hours round trip.

How should I travel?

A car with a driver is the sensible option: mountain roads, long distances and stops on the way. Confident riders can do it by scooter — traffic is lighter than in the south, but some stretches are rough.

When is the best time for the east?

The dry season (April–October): snorkelling visibility is better and Agung is more often clear of clouds. The Gates of Heaven and sunrises are an early-morning story in any season.
