Yoga and wellness in Bali: where to base yourself (2026)

14 September 2026 · 5 min read

Bali is the global capital of the drop-in yoga class, and the difference between a transformative month and an expensive one is mostly about where you sleep and how far you have to travel to get on a mat.

Ubud: the centre of gravity

Ubud has the deepest concentration of studios, teacher trainings, sound healing, breathwork, Ayurveda, raw-food cafes and Balinese healers on the island. It is cooler and greener than the coast, the days start early, and the whole town runs on an eight-o-clock bedtime, which is exactly what a serious practice wants. The trade-offs are humidity, rain and the absence of the sea, which is 60 to 90 minutes away. Food is covered in eating in Ubud.

Canggu and Pererenan: yoga plus a life

A strong studio scene with a fitness and surf culture attached: morning yoga, an afternoon surf, gyms, physiotherapy, cold plunge and ice baths, and far more social energy than Ubud. Hotter, busier and you will need a scooter. Best if you want practice to be one part of your day rather than the whole structure of it.

Sanur and Ungasan: the quiet alternatives

Fewer studios, far more calm. Sanur suits people who want a swimmable sea, a flat promenade for walking and a routine without a scene; the Bukit suits those who want space, cliffs and the white sand of Melasti, provided they have transport.

What it costs

  • Drop-in class: commonly 130,000 to 200,000 IDR.
  • Class packs: usually much better value, from around 1,000,000 IDR for ten.
  • Monthly unlimited passes exist at bigger studios and pay for themselves if you go five times a week.
  • A 200-hour teacher training: typically a few thousand dollars, often including accommodation and food. Check what the price includes before comparing numbers.
  • Balinese massage: from around 100,000 to 200,000 IDR an hour locally, far more in resort spas.

Choosing a studio rather than a vibe

  • Drop in before you buy a pack. Teaching quality varies enormously, and marketing tells you nothing.
  • Check the room: a fan-cooled shala in Ubud in February is a different experience from an air-conditioned studio.
  • Look at who is teaching your style rather than the studio's name, since visiting teachers rotate constantly.
  • For teacher training, ask about the lead teacher's hours, the daily schedule, the certification body and whether the price includes food and a private room.

The accommodation details that matter

  • Distance to the studio. A 15-minute walk gets used; a 25-minute scooter ride in traffic gets skipped by week two. Pick the housing after you pick the studio.
  • Space to practise at home: a flat covered terrace or a spare room is worth more than a second bathroom.
  • A kitchen. Wellness eating out in Bali is lovely and expensive; a kitchen with a fridge and a water gallon changes the budget, as the food cost guide shows.
  • Quiet. Early nights need it. Ask the construction question in writing: how to check.
  • A pool for recovery, and shade over it so it is usable in the afternoon.

Timing a wellness month

The dry season is easier for daily practice, and May or September give you good weather without peak prices. The wet months are cheaper and greener, with the rice terraces at their best, and an afternoon downpour is a reasonable excuse to be inside anyway: see the February notes.

Build in the rest of Bali

Keep one day a week for the island: the waterfalls, the purification pools at Tirta Empul, the rice terraces or a sunrise on Mount Batur. The week itinerary is a good template for the days off.

Rent the month direct

A wellness month means a monthly rate, a quiet room and a terrace you can roll a mat out on, none of which booking platforms handle well while adding 15 to 25 percent commission. Renting direct from the owner gets you the real monthly price, a written agreement covering utilities and a manager who can confirm how far the studio really is. See the rentals catalogue or ask in the FAQ.
