How much does food cost in Bali? Warungs vs restaurants (2026)

6 April 2026 · 5 min read

Food in Bali can cost 3 dollars or 30 dollars for the same hunger. Understanding the tiers is the fastest way to control your budget without eating worse.

The price tiers

  • Local warung: a plate of nasi campur, mie goreng or chicken with rice, roughly 25,000 to 50,000 IDR. Fresh, generous and cooked to order.
  • Tourist-facing warung or local cafe: 50,000 to 90,000 IDR for the same dishes in a nicer room with a menu in English.
  • Western cafe brunch: smoothie bowls, eggs, sourdough, specialty coffee, usually 90,000 to 180,000 IDR a head.
  • Western restaurant dinner: mains from around 150,000 to 350,000 IDR, more in Seminyak.
  • Beach club or fine dining: no ceiling. Expect a day at a beach club to cost what three days of warung eating does.

The charges added to your bill

Many restaurants quote prices followed by two plus signs, which means tax and service are added on top. Indonesian restaurant tax runs around 10 to 11 percent and a service charge of 5 to 10 percent is common in the more formal places. That is up to 21 percent more than the menu price, so check the small print at the bottom of the menu before you order. Warungs almost never do this. Tipping on top is optional, as explained in the tipping guide.

Drinks are where budgets break

  • Local beer: usually 25,000 to 50,000 IDR in a warung, considerably more in a beach club.
  • Imported wine and spirits carry heavy duty. A mediocre bottle of imported wine can cost more than a night in a guesthouse.
  • Fresh juice and coconuts: 20,000 to 40,000 IDR, and among the best value on the island.
  • Specialty coffee: 30,000 to 60,000 IDR. Bali takes its coffee seriously.

Cooking at home

If you have a villa kitchen, self-catering halves your food line. Local markets sell tropical fruit, vegetables, eggs and rice remarkably cheaply; supermarkets stock imported cheese, cereal and meat at European prices or above. The rule is simple: buy local produce locally and treat imported goods as a luxury. A villa with a working kitchen, a decent fridge and a drinking-water gallon pays for itself over a month, which is why the check-in checklist starts in the kitchen.

Where to eat by area

Each area has its own food economy. Canggu is cafes and brunch, Seminyak is restaurants and cocktails, Ubud is plant-based and Balinese, Kuta and Legian are the cheapest, Jimbaran is seafood on the sand and Sanur is calm and family-friendly. Pick an area that matches how you like to eat, using the area guide.

A realistic daily food budget

  • Warungs and cooking: 10 to 15 dollars a day per person.
  • Mixed, with a cafe breakfast and a good dinner: 25 to 40 dollars.
  • Restaurants and beach clubs: 60 dollars and up.

These feed into the wider picture in the monthly cost of living guide.

The villa decision that affects your food bill

A kitchen you will actually use beats a photogenic one. Ask about the hob, the fridge, the water gallon and the nearest market before booking, and rent direct from the owner so you can ask a manager rather than a platform that adds 15 to 25 percent and answers nothing. See the kitchens in the rentals catalogue.
