Uluwatu or Canggu: where should a surfer stay in Bali? (2026)

28 January 2026 · 6 min read

If you are coming to Bali to surf, this is the only area question that matters. The answer depends almost entirely on your level and on how much convenience you are willing to trade for wave quality.

Canggu: forgiving waves, zero friction

Canggu is a beach-break coast: sand bottom, waves that reform, consequences that are mostly bruised pride. Batu Bolong is the beginner and longboard classic, Echo Beach and Pererenan get punchier and are genuinely good on the right swell, and Berawa fills the gaps. Everything is within a ten-minute scooter ride, board racks are everywhere, and you can be in the water fifteen minutes after waking up.

Uluwatu and the Bukit: reef, power, consequence

Uluwatu and its neighbours are reef points over shallow coral. Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban and Balangan are world-class and crowded for a reason. They are also unforgiving: reef cuts, strong currents, tide-dependent access down cliff stairways and a localised, high-performance crowd. If you are still working on your pop-up, this is not where you learn. Start at Kuta or Batu Bolong instead, as set out in the beginner surf guide.

Seasons: it changes the answer

  • Dry season, roughly April to October: southeast trade winds blow offshore on the west coast. The Bukit is at its best and Canggu is good in the mornings before the wind turns onshore.
  • Wet season, roughly November to March: winds swing and the west coast gets choppy more often. Both areas still work, especially early, but east-coast spots near Sanur and Nusa Dua become the smarter call on many days.
  • Check the month you are coming in the month-by-month notes, and read surf seasons month by month for the full picture.

Life outside the water

Canggu wins on convenience: gyms, physio, cafes, coworking, supermarkets and a social scene. The Bukit wins on views and quiet. Bingin is a tiny cliff village where the beach is at the bottom of 100 steps; Ungasan gives you space and the white-sand beaches of Melasti. Food is simpler and more spread out, as covered in eating in Uluwatu and Bingin.

Accommodation and prices

Canggu has far more supply, so it is easier to find a modern villa with a pool and a desk at a sane monthly rate. The Bukit splits between simple surf bungalows near the cliffs and expensive view villas with very little in between. Budget for transport either way: the Bukit's spots are 10 to 30 minutes apart by scooter.

The plan that keeps everyone happy

Base in Canggu for the first week, surf twice a day, then move to the Bukit for a week once your paddling fitness is back. That is exactly how our Bali surf trip itinerary is structured. Travelling with non-surfers? Canggu gives them cafes; the Bukit gives them cliffs and little else.

Direct booking for surf trips

Surf trips mean long stays, flexible dates and early check-ins, which is exactly what the booking platforms handle worst while taking 15 to 25 percent of the price. Rent directly from the owner, agree the monthly rate and board storage in writing, and keep the commission for boards and lessons. Start with the rentals catalogue or ask the manager in the FAQ.
