Bali surf seasons: where the waves are, month by month (2026)

15 June 2026 · 6 min read

Bali works as a surf destination 365 days a year because it has coasts facing opposite directions. The trick is knowing which side is switched on when you arrive.

The mechanism in one paragraph

From roughly April to October the southeast trade winds blow, which is offshore on the west-facing coast, and Indian Ocean groundswell arrives consistently. From roughly November to March the winds swing around to the northwest, which blows onshore on the west coast and offshore on the east. So the dry season belongs to the Bukit and Canggu, and the wet season belongs to the east coast around Sanur, Nusa Dua and the Keramas stretch.

Month by month

  • April: the season opens. Wind settles offshore, swell builds, crowds still thin. One of the best months of the year.
  • May: consistent and uncrowded. Many regulars pick May over July.
  • June: solid swell, the coolest nights, and crowds arriving from late in the month.
  • July and August: peak size and peak crowds. The Bukit reefs are world class and packed; expect bigger, heavier days and a competitive line-up.
  • September: the insider month. Still proper dry-season surf, far fewer people, lower prices.
  • October: the last reliable dry-season month, with the first onshore days creeping in.
  • November to March: the west coast gets more onshore wind and rain, but mornings often stay clean. The east coast comes alive, and swell is generally smaller and more forgiving.

Where to surf in each season

Dry season, west coast: Padang Padang, Bingin, Suluban and Balangan on the Bukit for experienced surfers; Batu Bolong, Echo Beach and Pererenan in Canggu for everyone else; Kuta for beginners all year.

Wet season, east coast: the reefs and beach breaks around Sanur and Nusa Dua, plus the Keramas stretch further east. These are mostly reef waves that want a bit of experience, and Sanur also becomes the island's kitesurfing centre.

Tides matter as much as swell

Bali's tidal range is significant, and many spots only work on part of the cycle. The Bukit's cliff-stair access can be cut off at high tide, and some reefs go dangerously shallow at low. Check a tide chart daily, ask locally, and build your session times around the water rather than your breakfast.

Crowd strategy

  • Dawn. The single most effective tactic in Bali. Be paddling out at first light and you surf a different island.
  • Avoid the obvious spot on the obvious swell. One bay over is often half as crowded.
  • Go in September or April rather than August.
  • Learn the etiquette before the Bukit: do not drop in, do not paddle around people, and remember that the locals and the regulars have the priority.

Where to base yourself

For a dry-season trip, split between Canggu and the Bukit, as our surf trip itinerary does. For a wet-season trip, base in Sanur, which puts you on the working side of the island with a calm lagoon for the flat days. The full comparison is in Uluwatu or Canggu.

Book the stay around the swell, direct

Surf trips need flexible dates, board storage and early starts, which is exactly where platforms are weakest while charging 15 to 25 percent commission. Renting direct from the owner gets you the real rate, a written agreement and a manager who can sort an outdoor shower and a 5am gate code. See options near the breaks in the rentals catalogue.
