Sanur or Nusa Dua: which is better for a family trip to Bali? (2026)

2 February 2026 · 6 min read

Almost every family travelling to Bali with small children ends up comparing these two, and for good reason: they are the island's two genuinely swimmable, reef-protected coasts. Here is how they differ in practice.

The short answer

Choose Nusa Dua for a resort-style holiday where everything is groomed, safe and predictable. Choose Sanur if you want a real town around you, a lower bill and a shorter trip to the rest of the island.

The water

  • Geger and the Nusa Dua beaches: white sand, raked daily, reef a long way out, water that stays flat and shallow. About as close to a swimming pool as Bali's sea gets.
  • Sanur beach: darker sand, a reef lagoon that goes very shallow at low tide, and a 5 km paved promenade that is a gift if you travel with a stroller or a scooter-averse grandparent.
  • Both beat the southwest coast, where Canggu and Seminyak have real waves and rip currents.

Walkability and daily logistics

Nusa Dua is an enclave: wide clean roads, security gates, a shopping and restaurant complex, almost no traffic and almost no street life. You walk inside the bubble and take a car to leave it. Sanur is a normal Balinese town with a tourist spine: pharmacies, supermarkets, bike rental, warungs, a hospital and a long main street you can walk at night. With kids, that convenience adds up fast.

Prices and what you get

Nusa Dua is built around large hotels and expensive villas, and the food inside the enclave is priced accordingly. Sanur has the full range, from family guesthouses to pool villas, and a food scene that runs from 30,000 IDR warung plates to proper restaurants. Compare eating in Sanur with the enclave's hotel-restaurant model and the difference over two weeks is significant.

Day trips: Sanur wins

Sanur is the port for the fast boats to Nusa Penida and onwards towards the Gili islands, and it is a straight 60 to 75 minute run up to Ubud. From Nusa Dua you can reach the Benoa watersports strip and Pandawa in minutes, which children love, but everything inland takes longer.

The villa checklist that matters more than the area

  • Pool depth and whether there is a shallow step. Bali villa pools are almost never fenced.
  • Mosquito screens on bedroom windows, for dengue prevention as much as comfort.
  • A real kitchen with a fridge and a drinking-water gallon.
  • Stairs without handrails, which Balinese architecture loves.
  • Cot and high chair on request. Run the full check-in checklist on day one.

Timing

Both areas are at their calmest in the dry season, and Sanur's lagoon is swimmable year-round. Note that the east coast actually gets the better conditions in the wet months, so a January family trip is more pleasant here than on the west coast. See January in Bali and our family itinerary.

Why families book direct

Family trips need specifics: an actual cot, a known pool depth, an early check-in after a night flight. Platforms charge 15 to 25 percent commission and still cannot answer those questions. Renting direct from the owner means a manager who has stood in the villa, a written agreement and the owner's own price. See family-ready places in the rentals catalogue.
