Can you legally work remotely from Bali? The visa options in 2026

27 April 2026 · 6 min read

Bali has one of the largest remote-work populations on earth, and for years most of it operated on tourist documents. That has been changing. Here is a clear-eyed summary, with the caveat that immigration rules in Indonesia move faster than most countries and you should always confirm current terms with the official immigration service or a licensed agent.

The principle

A tourist visa or visa on arrival is for tourism. It does not permit working for an Indonesian employer or earning income from inside the Indonesian market. Working online for a company and clients outside Indonesia, paid into a foreign account, has long sat in a grey zone that enforcement largely ignored, but grey zones are not a plan, and Indonesia has now created an explicit category for exactly this situation.

Option 1: the remote-worker permit

Indonesia introduced a remote-worker stay permit, often referred to by its index code in the E33 family and marketed as a digital nomad visa. In broad terms it is aimed at people employed by or contracted to companies registered outside Indonesia, grants a stay of around a year, and requires documentary proof of the employment relationship plus an income threshold that has been reported in the region of 60,000 dollars a year, along with bank statements and health coverage. The precise figures, document list and processing route change, so treat this paragraph as a map rather than a checklist and verify before you apply.

Option 2: the single-entry visit visa

The visit visa, still commonly called the B211A, is the workhorse for people staying three to six months. It is sponsored, applied for before arrival and extendable in stages, as described in how long you can stay. It is not a work permit, but it is the standard route for a long stay that is not employment in Indonesia.

Option 3: a sponsored KITAS

If you are employed by an Indonesian company, run a registered Indonesian business, are married to an Indonesian citizen or qualify for a retirement permit, a KITAS is the proper document. It is also the only route that makes you clearly compliant if any part of your income touches Indonesia.

Where people get into trouble

  • Serving Indonesian clients on a tourist document. This is the bright line, and it is enforced.
  • Anything resembling local employment, including unpaid work for a local business in exchange for accommodation.
  • Overstaying while waiting for paperwork. The fine is roughly 1,000,000 IDR a day and the consequences escalate, see the overstay guide.
  • Using unlicensed agents found in chat groups. Your passport is not something to hand to a stranger.

Tax, briefly and honestly

Tax residency rules are separate from immigration rules and depend on days present, your home country's law and any double-taxation treaty. Spending most of a year in Indonesia can create obligations. This is a question for a qualified accountant in your own jurisdiction, not for a blog.

The practical setup that works

Housing for a long legal stay

Visa paperwork often asks for proof of address, and a proper rental agreement is useful well beyond immigration. Renting direct from the owner gives you that agreement, the owner's monthly rate instead of a platform rate inflated by 15 to 25 percent commission, and a manager who can confirm the address. Browse monthly places in the rentals catalogue.
