What happens if you overstay your visa in Bali? (2026)
4 May 2026 · 4 min read
Overstaying in Indonesia is not a paperwork irritation, it is an immigration offence with a daily price tag. Most cases are accidental, and all of them are preventable.
The headline numbers
- A short overstay is penalised with a daily fine, widely applied at around 1,000,000 IDR per day, payable at the airport before you can leave.
- The fine applies per person, including children.
- A long overstay, generally measured in weeks or months rather than days, moves out of fine territory and into enforcement: detention, deportation at your own expense and a re-entry ban of a length determined by immigration.
- Exact amounts and thresholds are set by regulation and change, so confirm with the official immigration service rather than relying on a number from a forum.
What it looks like in practice
You arrive at Denpasar airport for your flight, passport control flags the overstay, and you are taken to a payment desk. With a short overstay and the cash or card to pay, you pay and you fly, though you should allow several extra hours. With a long overstay you may not fly that day at all.
Why people overstay by accident
- Counting a month instead of 30 days. The entry day counts as day one, so a 30-day VOA stamped on 3 March expires on 1 April, not 3 April.
- Assuming the extension is instant. It is not. Start seven to ten days early, as set out in the extension guide.
- Trusting an agent without tracking it. If your passport is with an agent, you are still the one liable. Ask for written confirmation that the extension has been granted.
- Believing the VOA extends twice. It does not: 30 plus 30 is the ceiling, after which you need a different visa, as explained in how long you can stay.
- A changed flight. Rebooking a departure three days later can quietly put you over.
The two-minute routine that prevents all of it
- Photograph your entry stamp at the airport.
- Calculate the expiry date the same evening, counting the entry day as day one.
- Set two phone reminders: one on day 18 to start the extension, one three days before expiry.
- Keep a copy of the extension approval in your phone, not just a promise in a chat.
If you realise you are already over
Do not go quiet and hope. Contact a licensed visa agent or the immigration office immediately, get the current position in writing and budget for the fine. A short, self-reported overstay handled promptly is a bad day; an ignored one becomes a ban. Reference material in the visa guide and the FAQ.
One March date to watch
Nyepi, the Day of Silence, closes the airport for 24 hours and no flight leaves. If your visa expires on or around that date you have a problem, so check the date before booking March travel, as explained in the Nyepi guide and the March notes. Boat days carry the same risk in reverse: a cancelled crossing back from the Gili islands has tipped more than one traveller into overstay, so never plan an island trip that ends on your last legal day.
Housing that extends when you do
Many overstays start as housing problems: an extension comes through late, or the villa is booked out from Friday. Renting direct from the owner means you can discuss extending with a real manager instead of fighting a platform's calendar, at the owner's rate rather than one inflated by 15 to 25 percent commission. See flexible monthly options in the rentals catalogue.
