Bali for digital nomads: where to live and how to pick housing (2026)

Bali is the world's nomad capital, but the "laptop by the rice field" fantasy dies fast on weak Wi-Fi and a jackhammer next door. Here's what to check when your laptop pays the bills.
Internet: verify before booking
- Ask for a speed test from inside the villa — ideally live on a video call. 30–50 Mbps fibre is comfortable; 100+ is common in newer villas
- Ask for the provider and connection type: fibre beats wireless links, which sag in rain
- Backup channel — a local SIM with a big data package; 4G is strong in all popular areas
Power and outages
Electricity cuts happen — planned and not. Ask what happens to the router in an outage, whether there's a generator or inverter, and keep a power bank. A coworking space nearby is the ultimate fallback: Canggu, Pererenan and Ubud have dozens.
Workspace and noise
- A real desk and chair — ask for photos; many villas have only bar stools and sun loungers
- AC in the work room — afternoons are hot
- Construction kills calls: how to check the surroundings. Roosters and temple ceremonies are part of Bali — you adapt
Where nomads live
Canggu and Pererenan — community, cafes, coworking; Ubud — jungle quiet; Sanur — order and calm; Uluwatu — ocean and surf after work. Compare in the area guide. Bonus: UTC+8 puts European calls in your afternoon — mornings stay free for the ocean.
The practical plan
- Book the first month with verified internet from the catalogue — the manager sends real speed tests on request
- Then extend or move, already knowing the area — monthly pricing is flexible: how it works
- Check-in day: run the checklist, speed test first
