Ubud or Canggu: where should you actually base yourself in Bali? (2026)

14 January 2026 · 6 min read

Ubud and Canggu are the two most popular bases on Bali, and they attract almost opposite people. Choosing wrongly costs you a holiday, so here is the full picture.

The fundamental difference: no sea in Ubud

Ubud sits inland among rice terraces and river valleys. The nearest beach is 60 to 90 minutes away by car, which in practice means you will not go. Canggu is on the coast with surf at the end of the lane. If sea time is part of your Bali, Ubud cannot be your only base.

Climate and comfort

  • Ubud is a few degrees cooler, greener and noticeably wetter. Nights can drop to 20 to 21C in the dry season, which is a relief if you sleep badly in heat.
  • Canggu is hotter, breezier and dustier, with sea air and black-sand heat radiating off the roads by midday.
  • In the rainy season (November to March) Ubud gets more hours of rain and more mud; the coast dries out faster. See the February notes for what the wet months really feel like.

Daily life and food

Ubud's centre is walkable but clogged with traffic; outside it you need transport. The food scene is plant-based, health-focused and strong on local Balinese cooking, as covered in eating in Ubud. Canggu is cafe culture, surf food and brunch, detailed in eating in Canggu. Both have supermarkets and warungs on every block.

What you do with your days

  • Ubud: yoga, temples, waterfalls, the rice terraces, the Monkey Forest, sunrise on Mount Batur, markets and craft villages.
  • Canggu: surfing before work, the gym, beach clubs at sunset, scooter trips up the coast, day trips to the Bukit.

Remote work

Both are nomad hubs with plenty of coworking. Ubud tends to suit deep-focus work and early nights; Canggu suits people who want a social scene attached to their laptop. Fibre internet is available in both, but villa quality varies enormously and rain can knock out wireless links, so always check the connection before you commit, as described in the nomad housing guide.

Prices

Ubud is usually the cheaper of the two for the same square metres, particularly outside the central streets, because competition is fierce and the land is cheaper. Canggu commands a surf and lifestyle premium. In both, monthly rates come in far below nightly rates, and the gap widens in the rainy season.

The answer most people land on

Stay in Canggu if your trip is two weeks or less and includes the ocean. Stay in Ubud if you are here for yoga, nature, culture or writing a book. Stay in both if you have a month, and spend the overlap days exploring the middle of the island using our week-long itinerary. Not sure either fits? Rent direct and keep the commission

In both areas the same villas are listed on the big platforms at 15 to 25 percent above the owner's own price. Booking direct removes that margin, gives you a written rental agreement and puts a manager on the other end of Telegram instead of a call centre. See what is available in the rentals catalogue.
