From the airport
Ngurah Rai airport sits between Kuta and Jimbaran: Kuta is 15–25 minutes away, Seminyak and Sanur about 30–40, Uluwatu 45–60, Canggu 60–90, Ubud roughly 1.5 hours. Official airport taxis have fixed rates (about IDR 150–250k to Kuta/Seminyak, 250–350k to Canggu, 400–500k to Ubud); Grab and Gojek pick up from the car park and run 20–30% cheaper. Booking a transfer together with your accommodation is the calm option for night arrivals.
Scooters & drivers
Scooters are the island default at IDR 70–100k/day or 1–1.5 million/month — but legally you need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle category: police checkpoints in Kuta and Canggu fine riders without one, and insurance won't pay out in an accident. Never leave your passport as a deposit. For temple-and-waterfall day trips, hire a private driver: IDR 700k–1M for 8–10 hours including fuel — it beats self-drive car rental on comfort and often on cost.
Gojek, Grab & boats
Gojek and Grab both work island-wide, on motorbikes (IDR 15–30k short hops) and cars (IDR 50–100k for 20–30 minutes). Install both — prices differ per ride. Watch for 'red zones' (parts of Canggu beaches, central Ubud) where local communities block app pickups: walk a couple of hundred metres or take a local taxi at a negotiated price. Bluebird is the reputable metered taxi. Fast boats to Nusa Penida leave from Sanur (30–45 min), to the Gili Islands and Lombok from Padang Bai.
FAQ
Do I need a scooter?
In walkable pockets of Seminyak or Ubud centre, no. Almost everywhere else it hugely helps — but ride legally (IDP with motorcycle category) and always wear a helmet.
Is traffic really that bad?
In the south, yes — Canggu, Kuta and the airport corridor crawl at peak hours. Multiply Google's estimate by 1.5 in the evening.
Do apps take foreign cards?
Most foreign cards attach fine; otherwise choose cash. Fares are honest and haggle-free, which is why locals and expats both use them.
