Gili Trawangan, Meno or Air: which island should you pick? (2026)

29 June 2026 · 5 min read

The Gilis are three small coral islands off Lombok, east of Bali, with no cars and no scooters. They look identical on a map and feel completely different. Picking the wrong one is the main way people come home disappointed.

Gili Trawangan: the big one

The largest and busiest: dive shops, bars, restaurants, beach clubs, yoga, a proper main strip and a sunset side. If you want company, nightlife, dive courses and the option of doing something every evening, it is Trawangan. It is also the most expensive and, in high season, the most crowded.

Gili Meno: the quiet one

The smallest and sleepiest, with a salt lake in the middle, a turtle hatchery, excellent snorkelling straight off the beach and almost nothing to do after dark. Couples and honeymooners choose Meno, and so do people who want to read a book for four days. If silence makes you restless, do not book it.

Gili Air: the balance

The compromise most people should make: a real local village, enough cafes and bars for variety, good snorkelling, shallow turquoise water and a pace that is relaxed without being comatose. Air is the island to pick if you cannot decide.

What all three share

  • No motorised transport. You walk, cycle or take a cidomo, the local horse cart. The islands are small enough to circle on foot in one to two hours.
  • Turtles in the shallows, reliably, which is the single best reason to come.
  • Limited infrastructure: power cuts happen, fresh water is precious, and medical facilities are minimal, with anything serious meaning a boat or a flight.
  • Cash matters. There are ATMs on the bigger islands but they run empty, so bring rupiah.

Getting there from Bali

  • Fast boats leave from Padang Bai in east Bali and from Sanur, taking roughly one and a half to two and a half hours depending on the route and conditions.
  • Return fares commonly run from around 600,000 IDR upwards.
  • Crossings can be rough, particularly in the wet season, and services are occasionally cancelled for weather. Build a buffer day before any international flight.
  • Choose an established operator, check that life jackets are available and sit towards the middle and rear if you are prone to seasickness.

How many nights

Three nights minimum, because a day and a half of it is boats. If you have fewer than ten days in Bali, consider Nusa Penida instead: it is a 30 to 45 minute crossing from Sanur rather than a half-day each way, as compared in day trip or overnight.

Fitting it into a Bali trip

The Gilis slot naturally onto the end of an east Bali route: Sidemen, the water palaces and Amed, then a boat across. Alternatively go first and finish in the south. Either way, keep your main luggage with your Bali accommodation and travel light. Background in getting to Nusa Penida and the Gilis and our Gili islands overview.

Snorkelling and diving

All three islands sit on the same reef system and dive boats visit the same sites, so you do not need to stay on Trawangan to dive well. If diving is the main purpose of your trip, also consider Amed on Bali's east coast, which is cheaper, easier to reach and has excellent shore diving.

Base in Bali, book direct

Most people do the Gilis as a three or four-night excursion from a Bali base they keep for the rest of the trip. Renting that base direct from the owner means no 15 to 25 percent platform commission, a written agreement, and a manager who will store your bags and hold the villa while you are away.
