Do you need travel insurance for Bali? What to check before you buy (2026)

Yes, and not for the reason most people assume. The issue is not lost luggage, it is that private medical care in Bali is expensive, paid up front, and that a serious case means an air ambulance to Singapore or Australia.

What treatment actually costs

Bali has international-standard private clinics and hospitals in the Kuta, Nusa Dua and Denpasar areas. They are good, and they are priced in dollars rather than rupiah. A scooter accident with an X-ray, stitches and a night of observation can run into the thousands; surgery or intensive care runs far higher, and a medical evacuation flight is in a different league again. Clinics expect payment or an insurer's guarantee before treating, not afterwards.

The clause that voids most claims: scooters

This is the single most important paragraph on this page. Most policies cover motorcycle riding only if you hold a valid motorcycle licence, usually meaning your home licence with the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit, and often only up to a stated engine size and with a helmet worn. Riding without those and crashing means the claim is refused, and scooter accidents are the number-one cause of tourist injury in Bali. Read the licence guide before you rent, and the scooter guide for the rest.

What to check line by line

  • Medical limit. Low six figures in dollars is the sensible floor, because evacuation is what consumes it.
  • Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation, explicitly named.
  • Direct billing or a guarantee of payment, so you are not funding a hospital stay on a credit card.
  • A 24-hour assistance line that works from Indonesia.
  • Motorcycle cover and its exact conditions.
  • Activities: surfing is usually included; scuba diving around Amed is often capped by depth or excluded without a certification; volcano trekking such as the Mount Batur sunrise climb, canyoning and rafting may need an add-on.
  • Dengue and tropical illness, which should be standard but confirm it.
  • Alcohol exclusions. Most insurers refuse claims arising from intoxication, and this is a common reason for refusal in Bali.
  • Pre-existing conditions, declared honestly.
  • Trip disruption, which matters more here than elsewhere because of Nyepi closures, volcanic ash events and cancelled boat crossings.

The practical routine if something happens

  1. Call the insurer's assistance line before treatment where possible, so billing is arranged.
  2. Go to an international-standard facility for anything serious rather than the nearest clinic.
  3. Keep every receipt, prescription and report. Claims live and die on paperwork.
  4. Report thefts to the police and get a written report, which insurers require.

What insurance will not fix

Prevention is cheaper. Wear the helmet, ride slowly in your first week, do not ride after drinking, swim between the flags, treat reef cuts properly and use mosquito protection, as covered in the mosquito guide and avoiding Bali belly. The broader risk picture is in is Bali safe.

For long stays

Travel insurance is designed for trips, not residence, and most policies cap the trip length. If you are here for months, look at long-stay or international health cover instead, which some visa categories also require. See the visa guide and the three-month winter plan.

And one housing point

Where you stay affects your risk: pool depth with small children, mosquito screens on bedroom windows, handrails on Balinese stairs, and how far you are from a clinic. Those are questions for a human, which is one more reason to rent direct from the owner rather than through a platform that adds 15 to 25 percent and answers nothing. See the rentals catalogue.
