Prepayment when renting in Bali: how much upfront is normal (2026)
16 April 2026 · 4 min read
"Transfer the full amount now, many people want these dates" — the sentence that should slow you down. Here's what prepayment terms are normal in Bali and which ones should stop the transfer.
Market norms in 2026
- Nightly and up to a month: 30–50% deposit, balance at check-in
- Monthly rentals: first month upfront, sometimes plus a security deposit
- Long stays (3–12 months): month-by-month, or a discount for paying ahead — but only with a contract and after a viewing
- High season (July–August, New Year): higher prepayment is legitimate — demand is real and hosts say so upfront
When 100% upfront is fine
Short bookings on peak dates, promo rates with a full-payment discount, or bookings through a company with a contract and written confirmation. The difference is transparency: a real catalogue, real account details, a manager who takes a video call from inside the villa.
Red flags
- Urgency and countdowns
- Payment to a personal account that doesn't match the contract party
- No video call, no contract
- A price 30–40% below the market
The full scheme catalogue is in rental scams in Bali.
How to pay safely
- Contract first — what must be in it — then money
- Keep receipts and the chat history
- Verify the landlord by the steps in the rental guide
In the catalogue the prepayment is fixed in the contract and the booking is confirmed in writing. More answers — in the FAQ.
