When is the cheapest time to visit Bali? (2026)
23 March 2026 · 5 min read
Bali has two price peaks and one long trough, and the difference between them on accommodation is 30 to 50 percent. If your dates are flexible, this is the biggest single saving available to you.
The cheapest months: February and November
February is the quietest month of the year: the fewest visitors, the lowest rates and the greenest landscape. November is close behind, as the rainy season starts and the island empties after the dry-season crowds. In both months monthly rentals become genuinely negotiable and even nightly rates soften.
The expensive windows to avoid
- July and August. European summer holidays plus Australian school holidays. Best weather of the year and 20 to 40 percent higher prices, see the July notes.
- Roughly 20 December to 10 January. The sharpest peak of all, with 30 to 50 percent premiums and the best villas booked since autumn.
- Shorter bumps around Easter, Chinese New Year and Indonesian public holidays, when domestic travel fills the island.
The smartest compromise: the shoulder weeks
You do not have to choose between cheap and pleasant. Four windows give you dry-season weather at close to low-season prices:
- April: the rains stop, the island is still green from the wet season, roads are dry and waterfalls are full.
- May: dry, uncrowded and fairly priced. Many regulars call it the best month of the year.
- First half of June: peak-season weather before the school holidays start.
- September and early October: dry-season sunshine, calm seas for Nusa Penida crossings, and rates 20 to 30 percent below August.
What the rainy season actually costs you
Not as much as the name suggests. Bali rain in the wet months is typically a heavy afternoon downpour of one to two hours after a sunny morning, not days of grey. The sea is at its warmest, around 29C, and the rice terraces are at their best. The genuine downsides are humidity, seasonal debris on the west-coast beaches, and more mud on unpaved lanes. The full argument is in is the rainy season worth it.
Timing your booking, not just your trip
- For July, August or New Year dates, book two to four months ahead. The best villas go first and late bookers pay for it.
- For low season you can book much closer in, and showing up with flexible dates is a negotiating position.
- A month-long stay in low season often costs less than two weeks in high season. See monthly villa prices.
One date to check before booking March
Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence, falls in March and closes the airport for 24 hours. It is a remarkable thing to experience but it will wreck a tight itinerary. Read the Nyepi guide before you book March flights, and plan the rest of the trip with the week-long itinerary.
The discount that works in every month
Whatever dates you pick, booking platforms add 15 to 25 percent commission to the accommodation. Renting direct from the owner removes it in high season and low season alike, with a written rental agreement and a manager who knows the property. Compare seasonal rates in the rentals catalogue.
