Bali airport taxi guide: getting from Denpasar without overpaying (2026)

20 May 2026 · 4 min read

Ngurah Rai (DPS) is Bali's only airport, and the island's first tourist trap starts right in arrivals: touts quoting two to three times the market rate. Here's how to leave like a local.

Your options

  • Official taxi counter in arrivals — fixed rates by zone; pricier than apps but predictable
  • Grab/Gojek — order in the app, board at the designated pickup zone (follow the signs). Usually the cheapest
  • Pre-booked transfer — a driver with a name sign; slightly above app price, zero quests after a red-eye. For catalogue bookings the manager arranges it

Rough car prices

  • Kuta/Legian — 100–200k rupiah, 15–30 min
  • Seminyak — 150–250k, 30–45 min
  • Canggu — 250–400k, 45–90 min (traffic!)
  • Uluwatu/Bukit — 250–400k, 40–60 min
  • Sanur — 200–300k, 30–40 min
  • Ubud — 350–500k, 1.5–2 hours

Evening traffic in the south is brutal — budget time accordingly.

The playbook

  • Walk past anyone offering a "special price" in the hall
  • Change only taxi money at airport rates; do the real exchange in town at a licensed money changer
  • Sort connectivity before you need the app — eSIM before the flight or a SIM counter on arrival: guide
  • Landing at night? Pre-book the transfer — tired decisions are expensive decisions

Onward logistics — ferries to the islands are covered in the island-hopping guide, and app rides in the Gojek/Grab guide. Where to base yourself — the area guide.
