Gojek and Grab in Bali: how ride apps work (2026)
8 April 2026 · 4 min read
Gojek and Grab are Bali's everything-apps: bike taxis, cars, food and grocery delivery. If you don't ride a scooter, they are your base infrastructure. The 2026 briefing.
Which app?
Both. They're near-identical; coverage and prices vary block by block, so keep the pair installed. Bike rides (GoRide/GrabBike) are the cheapest and fastest for one person — the driver hands you a helmet and filters through traffic. Cars (GoCar/GrabCar) suit couples and luggage.
Prices
- Bike hop within an area — roughly 15–40k rupiah ($1–2.5)
- Car Canggu → Seminyak — roughly 80–150k rupiah
- Longer runs (to Ubud and back) — 250–400k; for a full sightseeing day a private driver beats app rides on price and comfort
- Food delivery — cheap and runs late
Paying without a working foreign card
Cash is a first-class option in both apps — select it per ride. The in-app wallets (GoPay/OVO) top up with cash at minimarket counters, which unlocks discounts and cashless convenience.
Pickup zones and no-go areas
Some beaches, temples and villages protect local taxi cooperatives: app drivers can't pick up right there, so the app moves your pin or the driver asks you to walk a hundred metres. Normal — walk to the pin. The airport has designated app pickup points; follow the signs past the touts offering "special price".
Practical tips
- Install and verify both apps before flying; you'll need a local number — grab a SIM on arrival: connectivity guide
- Rain and Friday nights mean surge pricing — wait 15 minutes
- Housing location halves your transport bill: compare areas in the guide and pick a well-placed unit from the catalogue
