Pererenan or Berawa: which part of Canggu should you rent in? (2026)
16 February 2026 · 5 min read
Canggu is not one place. It is a 6 km strip of former rice fields with three distinct characters, and picking the wrong end of it is the most common long-stay mistake in Bali.
Berawa: the comfortable end
Berawa is the Seminyak-facing side. Newer villa estates, big beach clubs, gyms, salons, international schools and a wide paved main road. It is the most convenient part of greater Canggu and the easiest with children, and Berawa beach has a steady wave with a social sunset scene. The trade-off is density and the sound of construction, because this is where most of the new building is happening.
Central Canggu: the engine room
Around Batu Bolong you get the highest concentration of cafes, surf schools, coworking spaces and scooters per square metre on the island. Batu Bolong is the beginner wave everyone learns on, and the food scene is at its deepest here. It is also the loudest and the most jammed, especially on the shortcut lanes between 5pm and 7pm.
Pererenan: the quiet edge
Pererenan is what people mean when they say Canggu five years ago: lanes between rice terraces, a growing but calm cafe scene, and the Canggu machine ten minutes away by scooter. Pererenan beach is black sand with a heavier wave that suits experienced surfers rather than beginners. The sunsets by the river mouth are among the best on the coast.
Head-to-head on what matters for a month
- Noise: Pererenan, then Berawa, then central Canggu.
- Convenience on foot: Berawa, then central Canggu, then Pererenan, where you need a scooter for everything.
- Beginner surf: central Canggu. Pererenan is not the place to learn.
- Value per square metre: usually Pererenan, which is still cheaper for a pool villa.
- Construction risk: highest in Berawa and the new Pererenan lanes, where empty land is still being filled in.
The construction question is not optional here
Greater Canggu is the fastest-building area in Bali. A villa that was surrounded by rice fields when the photos were taken can have a concrete frame going up next door by the time you arrive. Ask in writing what is being built within 100 metres, ask for a video call with the sound on, and read the full method in how to rent a quiet place in Bali.
Seasonal note
In the wet months the unpaved shortcut lanes turn to mud and the black-sand beaches collect river debris, which is worth knowing before committing to a three-month stay from December. The December notes and April notes show the two extremes, and the wider trade-offs are in is the rainy season worth it.
Still deciding?
Book one month, not six, in the part you think you want, then move once you know the lanes. Monthly rates are flexible and the whole area is 15 minutes end to end. Compare all three in the area guide.
Rent from the owner, not the platform
Canggu villas are the most heavily listed properties in Bali, which is why the 15 to 25 percent platform commission is so visible here. Booking direct gets you the owner's monthly rate, a signed agreement covering utilities and the deposit, and a manager who will answer the construction question honestly.
